I far as I know the word "swear" just has two different definitions similar to the word "mean". Mean can mean a mathematical average, being rude to someone, or as in "what does something mean, the definition or intent". It is called a homonym.
what I used to think until I looked in to the word deeper. Both definitions of the word "swear" have the same word somewhere in them, that word is "oath". To "pinky swear" is to basically take an oath, as in make a promise. Oath can also mean to use the name of God irreverently or in a demeaning way, according to Dictionary.com. The argument could be made that the first "swear" words ever written about were references to using the name in vain, or in other words oaths (the bad kind) were the first swear words. The word has now evolved to mean anything demeaning or irreverent and on the other branch of the evolution tree, to make a promise. The relationship is the word "oath".
